A large-scale crackdown across Gujarat has led to the detention of over 1,000 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly residing illegally in the state. Earlier in the morning, around 450 Bangladeshis were detained from Ahmedabad and Surat. According to officials cited by PTI, the majority of these individuals were apprehended during a combing operation across various parts of Ahmedabad. This major step was taken after Home Minister Amit Shah, in a meeting held yesterday, urged all state chief ministers to identify foreign nationals residing illegally and ensure their return.

Police conducted a combing operation in various localities during the early hours of the day and detained foreign immigrants residing illegally in the city, said Ajit Rajian, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch.

"More than 450 illegal immigrants, mostly from Bangladesh, have been detained and are being interrogated. If found without valid documents, they will be deported," he said.

Rajian stated that the operation was conducted jointly by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, Special Operations Group, Economic Offences Wing, and police personnel from Zone 6 and the police headquarters. He added that the detainees have been held at Kankaria Football Ground for further action.

In a coordinated operation led by the Gujarat Police, along with the Special Operations Group (SOG), Crime Branch, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), and local police units, extensive raids were carried out, including in Surat. During the early morning hours, over 450 suspected illegal immigrants were detained. Authorities confirmed that the individuals had entered India without valid documents and were residing in the country using forged identification.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (SOG), Rajdeep Singh Nakum, stated that the detentions in Surat were based on intelligence inputs. He confirmed that the individuals had entered India illegally and were residing in the country using forged documents. “They had entered India illegally and were living with forged documents. After the investigation, they will be deported to Bangladesh,” he said.

Sharad Singhal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), stated that the operation was conducted following direct instructions from the Home Minister, the Commissioner of Police, and the Director General of Police. He noted that prior to this recent crackdown, two FIRs had been registered since April 2024, resulting in the arrest of 127 Bangladeshi nationals and the deportation of 77.
