Hajj pilgrimage 2025: The annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca is set to begin on June 4, after the Bakrid moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. The Supreme Court has announced the date in a statement issued by the official Saudi Press Agency. Saudi Space Observatory reported the sighting of the moon.
In a press conference, Saudi Arabia's Hajj Minister Tawfiq Al-Rabiah said that about one million pilgrims from all over the world have already arrived in the country. According to official figures, 1.8 million Muslims participated in the Hajj last year.
The date of the Hajj pilgrimage is determined by the Islamic lunar calendar, which means it changes each year. In recent years, it has taken place during Saudi Arabia's summer months. Bakrid is celebrated on the 10th of Zul-Hijjah all over the world.
The devotees take part in four days of celebrations, the most important of which comes on the second day with mass prayers at Mount Arafat, the hill where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have given his last sermon.
This year, the event will take place on June 5, while Eid al-Adha falls the following day, the Saudi Press Agency said.
