Responding to the arrest of fourth India in the Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Indian authorities have never received ‘anything specific’ to probe the case. His response came days after Canada's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) arrested one Amandeep Singh from British Columbia (BC) in the aforementioned case.
"I also read that another arrest has been made...We have long maintained that if any event or violence in Canada has any evidence or information that is relevant to be investigated in India, we are open to investigating it. To date, we have never received anything specific or worthy of being investigated by our investigative agencies,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.
Earlier, three Indians who got arrested in Nijjar’s killing were presented before a Canadian court through video for the first time. Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28, all Indian nationals residing in Edmonton, were arrested and charged on Friday with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Nijjar’s Killing:
Khalistan Tiger Force chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed on June 18 last year after being shot by unidentified assailants in Surrey, Canada. He was also the head of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib. Nijjar was India’s one of the most-wanted terrorists and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) declared a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on him.
A diplomatic tussle ensued between India and Canada after Justin Trudeau, while addressing the parliament, said their agencies were actively perusing ‘credible allegations’ of potential links between agents of the government of India in the killing of a Canadian citizen (referring to the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey on June 18).
