The two deaths have sparked shock and confusion within the police force and beyond. Sandeep Kumar had been investigating corruption allegations against Puran Kumar at the time of his death. He reportedly left behind a suicide note and a video, in which he accused the senior IPS officer of corruption and named his wife and others as being complicit.
Following these deaths, Rohtak police registered an FIR naming Amneet P Kumar, Amit Rattan, and two others for abetment of suicide and criminal conspiracy.
Sandeep's death added a dramatic and troubling new layer to the case of Puran Kumar. What initially appeared to be an isolated suicide now appears connected to deeper allegations of misconduct within the police department. Investigators are now re-examining the circumstances around Puran Kumar’s death in light of these developments.
Sandeep Kumar’s cremation was held in Jind on Thursday following a postmortem. His daughter, speaking to reporters in their hometown of Julana, expressed hope that the government would support their family in the aftermath of her father’s death.
"My father gave his life in the fight against corruption, he is a martyr... I have faith that Haryana Police and the government will support us," she said.
The funeral saw a large turnout, including villagers, community members, and political leaders from across parties. A procession of young men on motorcycles, many carrying the Indian flag, accompanied the police vehicle transporting the officer’s body to the cremation site, a sign of the respect he had earned among locals.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini visited the grieving family on Wednesday. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also met with them and announced that Sandeep’s wife would be offered a government job. He further assured the family that the government would take care of their children’s education.
