Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar’s family has agreed to a postmortem, and a team of doctors has begun preparations for the examination at PGIMER, Chandigarh. The cremation is expected to take place around 4 pm today. This decision follows a directive from the Chandigarh court instructing senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, wife of the late officer, to identify her husband’s body so that the postmortem could proceed.

In a statement, she said, "In view of the assurance extended by the UT Police for conducting a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation, and the commitment conveyed by the Government of Haryana to take appropriate action against any erring officials in due course of law, I have consented to the conduct of the post-mortem examination of Y Puran Kumar, IPS. Considering the evidentiary importance of a timely post-mortem and in the larger interest of justice, I have agreed for the same to be carried out as per prescribed procedure, by the constituted Board of Doctors, with the presence of a ballistic expert, under the supervision of a Magistrate, and with videography of the entire process to ensure complete transparency"

Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer serving as Inspector General at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak, was found dead at his Chandigarh residence on October 7, 2025, from a gunshot wound, reportedly self-inflicted with his service revolver.

Puran Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Anmeet P. Kumar, had initially refused the autopsy, demanding the arrest of former Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, whose names appeared in her late husband’s suicide note. The post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place at Chandigarh’s PGI Hospital, with Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur meeting the family before accompanying them.

Consent for the autopsy came a day after Chandigarh Police approached the court seeking directions for the family to identify the body. In response, the court issued a notice to Anmeet P. Kumar to file a reply personally or through counsel by October 15, failing which the application will be decided on merit.

The development follows mounting pressure, including a 31-member committee issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to remove Kapur from his post. Amid the controversy and a complaint filed by Anmeet P. Kumar, the Haryana government has placed Kapur on extended leave pending further inquiry, while Bijarniya was removed from his position after being named in the case.
