After securing campuses of IIM and AIIMS, the Haryana government is now pushing for an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the state. A proposal is being prepared for submission to the Centre asking to consider building an IIT campus in Haryana. The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has granted in-principle approval for setting up an IIT in Haryana. The state government will now identify suitable land to proceed with the project, reported Jagran.com.
However, securing land for the IIT campus is expected to be a major hurdle. The Haryana government requires 300 acres for the institution. The state's Technical Education Department has written to all District Deputy Commissioners to identify suitable locations as Haryana has witnessed delays in major projects in the past due to land scarcity.
Five BJP MPs from Haryana—Manohar Lal (Karnal), Krishan Pal Gurjar (Faridabad), Rao Indrajit (Gurugram), Chaudhary Dharambir Singh (Bhiwani-Mahendragarh) and Naveen Jindal (Kurukshetra)—are expected to push for the project in their respective constituencies.
Speculations suggest that Union Minister Manohar Lal has persuaded HRD Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to approve the IIT for Haryana. While Karnal and Kurukshetra are being considered as prime locations, all five BJP MPs are lobbying for the institute, the Jagran report stated.
Krishan Pal Gurjar, due to his strong influence in the Centre, could also secure the project for Faridabad. However, with land prices being significantly higher in Gurugram and surrounding areas, Bhiwani-Mahendragarh—where land is more readily available—could also be a viable option.
