In a bizarre remark, prompted by the Mahindra Thar’s frequent involvement in traffic incidents, a senior Haryana cop linked the SUV to reckless behaviour. The Director General of Police for Haryana, OP Singh, sparked a controversy after he said that 'people who drive a thar must be crazy'.

The remark came when DG was outlining traffic protocol and claimed the visibility of certain vehicles to the police team. Singh, while speaking to the press, said, "If it’s a Thar, how can we let it go? … People who drive Thars perform stunts on the road."

He added that the more modes of transport, vehicles have become a symbolic choice, stating, "The Thar is not a car, it’s a statement which says ‘this is how I am’."

Singh highlighted recent cases of dangerous stunts on Thars, passengers perched on roof racks or standing on side steps, and linked this behaviour to the SUV’s “macho” appeal among young drivers.

The comment was made amid rising cases of traffic violations and the abuse of high-powered SUVs on Haryana roads and highways.
