Hathras Stampede: After over 130 people died and several others were injured following a stampede at a religious gathering in Ratibhanpur of Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district on Tuesday, state minister Sandeep Singh informed that the death toll was continuously increasing, adding that instructions had come from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take required decisions on behalf of the government.

"We have been instructed by the CM to reach the Hathras incident site and look into the matter and take required decisions on behalf of the government. The number of deceased is continuously increasing…,” Uttar Pradesh minister Sandeep Singh said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The stampede took place after the Satsang (religious gathering) when a crowd of thousands of people started exiting the venue at once, Dainik Jagran reported.

Meanwhile, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge condoled the deaths in the incident in a post on X.

“The news of the death of many devotees due to stampede in the Satsang in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh is extremely painful. The scenes of the accident are extremely heart-rending. We express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We urge the government and administration to leave no stone unturned in treating the injured and provide immediate compensation to the victims,” Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X, formally Twitter.

“Workers of opposition parties are requested to provide all possible help to the people affected by the accident,” Kharge added.

While hundreds of injured have been transferred to nearby hospitals in Etah, Aligarh and Hathras, dead bodies are being transported to the Etah post-mortem house. Most of the casualties are reportedly women and children. As of now, 27 dead bodies have been transferred to the Etah post-mortem house, SSP Rajesh Kumar Singh said. The body count from adjoining districts was not immediately available.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed grief over the incident.

“Just now learnt that in a sad incident of stampede, at least 27 devotees (including 23 women and 3 children) have succumbed to death at Hathras, UP. My heart goes out to their family members. Sincere condolences to the bereaved kins,” CM Mamata Banerjee said in a post on X.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh termed the incident 'painful' and condoled the loss of lives. 

"The incident that happened in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is extremely painful. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families of those who have lost their loved ones in this. I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is providing all possible help to all the victims," the Defence Minister said in a post on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah condoled the deaths in the incident and informed that the local administration is engaged in relief work.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. I express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. May God give them strength to bear this pain. The local administration is engaged in relief work. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured," Amit Shah said in a post in Hindi on X.

Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi called for sensitive treatment from the govermnet's end on the matter.  

"The government should help people sensitively. I offer my condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones," Rahul Gandhi said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Blaming the state government for mismanagement, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said, "The incident that took place in Hathras is sad. Proper investigation should be done on how the incident took place and how the State Govt could not manage the crowd efficiently. I hope that proper treatment will be given to the injured..."

CM Yogi Takes Stock, Orders Probe

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He has also ordered ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh to launch a swift investigation into the causes behind the Hathras stampede incident.

"UPCM @myogiadityanath has expressed condolences to the bereaved families of those who died in the accident in Hathras district. He has also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. He has directed the district administration officials to immediately take the injured to the hospital for their proper treatment and to speed up the relief work at the spot. He has given instructions to investigate the causes of the incident under the leadership of ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh," CMO posted on X.
