The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for east and peninsular India, forecasting scorching temperatures over the next two days. The weather office has warned of prolonged heatwave conditions expected this summer, particularly from April to June.

According to the IMD's weather forecast, heatwave conditions are likely to persist over Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu until April 9. Several areas, including Karnataka, Rayalaseema, south Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, are expected to experience maximum temperatures.

What Is Heatwave Alert?

A heatwave occurs when air temperatures become dangerously high and pose a threat to human health. The IMD defines a heatwave based on temperature thresholds either in terms of actual temperature or its departure from normal.

For plains, a heatwave is considered when the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius or more, while for hilly regions, it's 30 degrees Celsius or more.

Precautions Advised by IMD Amid Heatwave Alert In India:

In light of the heatwave alert, the IMD has recommended several precautions to mitigate the impact of extreme heat:

Dos:

  • Stay hydrated by consuming an adequate amount of water.
  • Prevent dehydration by consuming Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and homemade summer drinks like coconut water, lemon water, and buttermilk.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored cotton clothes.
  • Use protective gear such as umbrellas, hats, sunglasses, and cloths to shield the skin and eyes from the sun's rays.
  • Pay special attention to the elderly, children, and individuals who are overweight.
  • Use fans, damp clothing and take bath in cold water frequently.
  • Keep animals in shade and give them plenty of water to drink.
  • Keep your home cool, use curtains, shutters or sunshade and open windows at night.

Don'ts:

  • Avoid outdoor activities between 12 noon and 3 pm when the sun is at its peak.
  • Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities amid heatwave alert.
  • Avoid consuming salty, spicy, oily, and high-protein foods.
  • Minimize cooking during peak hours in summer to reduce indoor heat.
  • Never leave pets or children unattended in parked vehicles.

As temperatures soar and the risk of heat-related illnesses increases, adhering to these precautions becomes essential to ensure the well-being and safety of individuals during the heatwave alert period.
