NH-707 Closed: The vehicular movement at the Paonta Sahib-Shillai Guma National Highway (NH-707) is shut in Himachal Pradesh after a landslide hit the first green corridor under construction in the state.
The highway has been closed since around midnight. Due to the closure, there is a long queue of vehicles on both sides of the highway.
As per a report by Jagran.com, hundreds of vehicles are stuck in the long jam. There are several people with serious medical conditions stuck in it, apart from children and the elderly.
The huge block of mountains blocked the road completely. The authorities are expecting to restore the normal movement by evening.
As part of the efforts to normalise movement, big machinery has been deployed to clear NH-707. The big rocks will be broken into small pieces before eventually being removed.
Local residents have alleged that the road has not been closed due to a natural disaster, but due to a man-made disaster.
They alleged that illegal blasting has been going on intermittently for the last several days in Gangtoli, right in front of the landslide spot. Locals say that heavy, unscientific blasting and undercutting are causing landslides here.
Due to the vibrations caused by blasting, the rocks near Uttari are sliding repeatedly, and the road is getting blocked. The landslide has affected vegetable farmers who visit the market regularly, and patients going to the hospital.
Reacting to the incident, SDM Shillai Jaspal said that a large chunk of mud fell on the Malwa Highway due to the landslide in Uttari. The company officials have been instructed to restore the highway as soon as possible, he added.
