Himachal Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast severe weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh till September 3. During this period, a yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued in many districts. On August 29, there will be a yellow alert in Una, Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur. On August 30, a similar alert is in place in eight districts including Chamba, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla. On August 31, a yellow alert has been issued for all districts except Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. Heavy rainfall is expected to lash the state from September 1 to 3.

Himachal Pradesh government on Thursday moved a resolution seeking declaring the monsoon-inflicted devastation in the state as a national disaster, under Rule 102. Himachal so far has suffered a loss of Rs 2,623 crore, as stated by Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri in state Asembly on Thursday.

“A resolution has been passed by the state assembly unanimously demanding the Centre to declare the devastation as national calamity and also announce a special relief package for the state,” the Deputy CM said while interacting with the media on Thursday.

As monsoon activity continues in Himachal, heavy rains occurred in many districts on Thursday night. Roads, electricity and drinking water supply have been badly affected due to downpour in Chamba, Kullu, Mandi and Kangra districts. Himachal’s capital Shimla, the sky remained overcast on Thursday after rain on Wednesday night. The process of restoring the roads which were closed due to the torrential rains of the past few days is going on a war footing.

During the last 24 hours, Pandoh in Mandi district recorded the highest rainfall of 110 mm. Bharedi and Mandi city in Hamirpur district received 60 mm each, Gohar in Mandi district received 50 mm, Shri Nayana Devi Ji in Bilaspur district received 40 mm, Manali in Kullu district received 30 mm, Rampur in Shimla district received 20 mm and Baldwara in Mandi district also received 20 mm rainfall.

No Loss Of Life Due To Landslide In Mandi

Following media reports and social media posts about a massive landslide in Banala, Mandi district, on Wednesday night, claiming that several vehicles were buried under the debris, the administration carried out swift action to clear the site. By Thursday evening, the entire debris had been removed. Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan and Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma confirmed that no vehicles or individuals were found buried, jagran.com reported.

Roads Connectivity, Electricity Supply Affected

So far 1 national highway and 524 roads are closed. 216 roads are blocked in Mandi, 169 in Kullu, 63 in Kangra, 32 in Shimla and 20 in Una. NH-3 is closed in Kullu. 1230 transformers are non-functional in the state, out of which 692 are non-functional in Kullu and 320 in Mandi.

312 Deaths So Far In Himachal

So far 312 people have died in the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh. 38 people are missing and 374 are injured. 51 deaths have been reported in Mandi, 49 in Kangra, 36 in Chamba, 28 each in Shimla and Kinnaur, 26 in Kullu and many more in other districts. So far 3,736 houses have been damaged, out of which 776 have been completely destroyed. 485 shops, 3367 cattle sheds have been destroyed while 1,854 domestic animals and 25,755 poultry birds have died.

Himachal Battles Flash Floods, Landslides And Cloudbursts

This monsoon, 90 flash floods, 86 landslides and 42 cloudburst incidents have been recorded in Himachal Pradesh. The highest number of flash floods (52) occurred in Lahaul-Spiti. 15 incidents of landslides occurred in Kullu, 14 in Shimla and 12 in Mandi, while 18 incidents of cloudburst have been reported in Mandi.
