In recent years, sustainable agriculture has become a hot topic with significant talks and attention given to this model. People are leaning towards organic farm produce owing to their rich nutritional profile and myriad benefits for health and well-being. Moreover, sustainable farming is better than traditional farming which has led to soil degradation over time causing an alarming decrease in crop yields and an increase in distress among farmers. What is more disturbing is the news of farmers' suicides due to poor yields and trivial income.
Amidst this, Patanjali Ayurveda is emerging as an icon for sustainable agriculture by promoting natural and organic farming in India. It encourages farmers to opt for organic farming that not only brings high-quality yields but also minimizes soil degradation to preserve the environment. This has empowered farmers both economically and socially, paving the way for a sustainable agriculture future.
With a vision rooted in nature, Patanjali Ayurveda, founded by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, has been an avid supporter of ancient Indian farming practices.
Earlier, farmers used to use only natural fertilizers to boost crop yields and Patanjali being an Ayurveda-driven brand actively supports using bio-based fertilizers only for the sake of the environment and mankind.
These days, farmers make use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers that may seem to help in getting rid of pesky pests and boosting crop production, but, in the long run, these are catastrophic for the environment and our health.
Recognizing the long-term harm of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, Patanjali encourages farmers to adopt natural farming practices that include using natural compost, natural cow-dung-based fertilizers and plant-based pesticides. These prevent soil degradation, maintain the nutrients of the soil, boost water retention and promote microbial life. This stimulates healthy crops and better soil fertility.
Scientific Backing and Research
A 2021 study published in the International Journal of Agriculture and Environmental Research found that organic farming increases soil biodiversity, enhances carbon content, and reduces soil erosion. Patanjali’s Bio Research Institute has agronomists and scientists that work in soil testing and training the farmers about how to manage soil health.
From time to time, Patanjali also collaborates with state governments and agricultural universities to spread the word about organic farming in India. They also conduct farm training programs and set up farmer support centers to help farmers understand how organic farming can double their yield and quality of the soil. Farmers are also taught how to switch to organic from chemical farming. As per reports, organic farms show around 25% better microbial activity as compared to traditional farms.
Empowering Farmers: Training and Market Support
Apart from training and support, Patanjali also offers a buy-back guarantee to their farmers to help them get the best price for their produce. Patanjali believes in establishing direct connections with farmers with no middleman to help farmers get better profits.
A case study conducted in 2022 by the Indian Journal of Sustainable Agriculture highlighted that farmers who are associated with Patanjali reported a significant decrease of 30-40 per cent in input costs. Additionally, the quality of their soil also improved within just two seasons.
Conclusion
Patanjali’s organic farming initiatives represent a powerful model of sustainable agriculture. By combining traditional wisdom with modern science, they are rejuvenating soil health, reducing farmer dependency on chemicals, and restoring dignity and profitability to farming. Through education, infrastructure, and market support, Patanjali is not just promoting organic farming but is leading a rural transformation, one field at a time.
