A Hyderabad luxury car dealer was arrested from Gujarat on Thursday for his alleged involvement in Rs 100 crore fraud involving customs duty evasion linked to the illegal import of high-end vehicles to India from countries like the United States and Japan. The man, identified as Basharat Khan is the proprietor of 'Car Lounge' showroom.
Illegal imports of 30 luxury vehicles were identified by the officials. Models such as the Hummer EV, Cadillac Escalade, Rolls-Royce, Lexus, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Lincoln Navigator were involved in the fraud.
Khan was involved in undervaluing luxury cars imported from abroad - in some cases at nearly 50 per cent of their actual value, officials said, as per an NDTV report. Basharat Khan made use of undervalued invoices and fake documents to escape the high customs duties, as per the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
According to the investigation, the luxury vehicles came to India from countries like the United States and Japan. These cars were rerouted through Dubai or Sri Lanka. At these locations, the high-end cars were changed from left-hand drive to right-hand drive to suit Indian needs.
As per the DRI officials, the import network spans across Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Delhi. Basharat Khan has been remanded to judicial custody and further investigation is underway, officials said, as per the report
