Hyderabad | Jagran News Desk: In a sensational development, all four accused arrested last week in the gang-rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinarian were killed in police encounter when they were trying to escape from custody.

The four accused -- Mohammed (26), Jollu Shiva (20), Jollu Naveen (20) and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20) -- were gunned down at the same spot where they had dumped the victim's body and set it afire on the night of November 27 after the gang-rape near Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

According to police, the quartet had been taken to the scene of the crime at 3:30 am am for a reconstruction. Cops claimed that the four tried to escape and were killed in the encounter. 

Here are the highlights of the day:

15:32 pm: Cyberabad CP, VC Sajjanar: We suspect that the accused were also involved in many other cases in Karnataka, investigation is on.

15:29 pm: Cyberabad CP, VC Sajjanar: There were around 10 police with the accused persons during the time of encounter. We have recovered the victim's cell phone here at the spot.

15:22 pm: Cyberabad CP, VC Sajjanar: We have also seized two weapons from the accused persons. The body of accused have been shifted to local govt hospital for PME.

15:20 pm: Cyberabad CP, VC Sajjanar: The police warned them and asked them to surrender but they continued to fire. Then we opened fire and they were killed in the encounter. During encounter, two police men have been injured and they have been shifted to the local hospital.

15:20 pm: Cyberabad CP VC Sajjanar on today's encounter: Today, the police brought the accused to the crime spot as part of investigation. The accused then attacked the police with sticks and then snatched the weapons from us and they started firing on police.

15:13 pm: Telangana Police briefs the media on today's encounter

14:17 pm: "We appreciate what Hyderabad Police has done (Telangana encounter). I announce reward of Rs 1 lakh each to all Police personnel involved in the encounter," says Naresh Selpar, Chairman, Raah Group Foundation 

14:16 pm: National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that the 4 accused, arrested by the police in connection with the rape and murder of veterinarian doctor in Telangana, have died in an encounter with the police this morning, reports ANI.

NHRC has asked its DG (Investigation) to immediately send a team for a fact finding on the spot investigation into the matter. The team of the Investigation Division of the Commission headed by an SSP, is expected to leave immediately and submit their report, at the earliest.
