A massive furore has erupted over the movie ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’, which is based on the infamous hijacking of an Indian Airline plane in Kandhar in 1999, after the terrorists were given Hindu names. The right wing has registered a strong objection over this, with many urging the people to boycott the movie.

BJP IT wing chief Amit Malviya alleged the act of giving Hindu names to the terrorists depicts the Left wing’s agenda to ‘whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists’. Malviya also rebuked filmmaker Anubhav Sinha for legitimising the criminal intent of the terrorists.

“The hijackers of IC-814 were dreaded terrorists, who acquired aliases to hide their Muslim identities. Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, legitimised their criminal intent, by furthering their non-Muslim names. Result ? Decades later, people will think Hindus hijacked IC-814. Left’s agenda to whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists, all Muslims, served,” he posted on X.

“This is the power of cinema, which the Communists have been using aggressively, since the 70s. Perhaps even earlier. This will not just weaken / put in question India’s security apparatus in the long run, but also shift the blame away from the religious cohort, that is responsible for all the bloodshed,” Malviya added.

Besides, a trend #BoycottBollywood has been fervidly spreading across social media platforms.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned the Netflix Content Head over the contentious web series, ANI reported citing sources. He has been asked to appear on Tuesday.

Notably, in the series, the hijackers are referred to as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola, and Shankar. Many on social media voiced ire and frustration over the use of the names Bhola and Shankar. Netizens alleged that the filmmaker intentionally chose Hindu names for the hijackers instead of their real names.
