Mumbai BEST Bus Accident: One pedestrian died, 8 injured in Mumbai's Lalbaugh area when a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus lost control. The incident occurred after a drunk passenger argued with the bus driver and seized the steering wheel, destabilising the vehicle.

The bus, which was on Route 66 from Ballard Pier to Rani Laxmibai Chowk in Sion, struck several pedestrians and collided with other vehicles, including two motorcycles and a car, before the driver regained control.

According to an official from the Kalachowki police station, the altercation between the passenger and the driver escalated as they approached Ganesh Talkies near Lalbaugh. During the argument, the passenger grabbed the steering wheel, causing the bus to veer off course.

All injured pedestrians have been taken to various hospitals for treatment. The police have detained the intoxicated passenger, and an investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.

This incident follows another recent bus tragedy in Mumbai, where five people lost their lives and 46 others were injured when a private bus crashed into a tractor and fell into a ditch on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on July 17. In response, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured.
