As the weather patterns are changing with each passing day, analysts have warned that a strong Western Disturbance is likely to bring heavy rain and hailstorms across parts of India, with drops in temperatures in India. The weather department on April 1 predicted that active western disturbances will cause an intense hailstorm on April 3 and 4 with sporadic heavy rainfall over the Kashmir Valley on the 3rd of April.
IMD stated that isolated hailstorm activity is expected to occur on April 3 and that a wet period with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur across central areas of the country until April 6. It also stated that daytime temperatures are likely to be around normal to below normal over Northwest India on April 6.
The last few days have recorded comparatively cooler weather than the usual days in many parts of the country as some rare occurrences in the weather pattern brought rain. The second half of last month also saw a western disturbance bringing rain and lowering mercury over northwest India, including parts of Delhi NCR.
Many weather analysts have labelled the western Disturbances as powerful, with its "U-shaped" jet streams, likely to bring hailstorms along with rainfall in parts of India. On Tuesday, Punjab and Haryana witnessed rain and hailstorms in several areas. Subsequently, farmers were worried about the anticipated damage to their wheat crops.
Powerful Western Disturbances To Hit Northwest India
Sharing a post on X, Dr Pradeep, who identifies himself as a climate scientist, said, “A powerful severe western disturbance is set to track across Northwest India, passing critically close to the Gujarat and Rajasthan border. This system will trigger a significant spell of extreme weather across multiple states.”
As per his prediction, the highly impacted zones would be Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, where intense rain and heavy mountain snowfall are expected. Punjab and Rajasthan are expected to witness widespread thunderstorms and gusty winds. While Gujarat has a significant impact along the northern borders and interior regions, it is likely.
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop across the plains and central/eastern belts, including north/central Haryana, Delhi NCR, West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh, Dr Pradeep said in his post.

Central/South parts of Maharashtra (Vidarbha/Marathwada), Chhattisgarh, and Telangana and parts of Odisha and West Bengal are also likely to witness rain and thunderstorms as the system moves through.
Dr Pradeep stated in a post on Tuesday that there will likely be a significant drop in temperature after the rain, but he also stated in another post that summer will likely begin in the second half of April.
‘Perfectly U-Shaped For Western Disturbances To Start From April 3
Amateur meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya stated on X that "jet streams are perfectly U-shaped for the upcoming western disturbance starting from 3rd April."
According to Mahesh Palawat, vice president of climate and meteorology at Skymet Weather, "we sometimes see an increase in the impact of the WDs in lower latitudes" when the westerly jet stream is especially wavy. A report cited Palawat as saying, "The wavy jet stream is linked to rapid warming of the Arctic."
"Cold front rains, hail, and storms are expected throughout northern and western India." According to Dahiya's X post, "too much weather action for the third driest month of the year" will result in strong nighttime storms on the southern and central peninsula.
He also said the delayed summer season is likely to pick up after April 15 only.
