IMD Weather Update: Despite a delayed onset, the Southwest Monsoon has now covered the entire country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said the monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the north Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab on July 9, completing its coverage of India one day later than its normal date of July 8.

Monsoon Completes Nationwide Coverage

A notable feature of this year's monsoon is that despite a delayed onset, it covered the entire country with a delay of just one day. The IMD said the southwest monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, three days later than its normal onset date of June 1. It also progressed slowly across the country, partly due to the influence of El Nino conditions. While June remained unusually dry, rainfall activity has picked up significantly in July.

According to the IMD, India received above-normal rainfall during the first nine days of July. Between July 1 and July 9, the country recorded 101.9 mm of rainfall, compared to the normal average of 73.8 mm for the same period. Earlier, in its monthly forecast issued on June 30, the IMD had predicted widespread rainfall during the first 10 days of July. However, it also stated that rainfall for the month as a whole is likely to remain below normal.

Heavy Rain Alert For Northwest India

Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing weather conditions, the IMD has also forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and heavy showers across several states on Friday, July 10. Several regions are likely to witness very heavy rainfall. In its daily weather bulletin, the weather department has forecast widespread rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Friday.

Heavy rainfall is likely to lash Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi may also witness very heavy showers. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely over Uttarakhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh, with gusty winds expected in some areas.

Forecast For Northeast India

Rainfall activity is expected to continue across central India, including Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Eastern India is also likely to witness widespread rainfall on July 10. Heavy rainfall is likely in Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. In southern India, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Telangana are expected to receive rain.

Delhi-NCR Weather Update

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting a generally cloudy sky with a spell of very light to light rainfall at many places. The national capital may also witness thunderstorm activity during the morning and forenoon hours. Meanwhile, parts of the NCR, including Gurugram, Faridabad and Noida are also expected to receive showers. However, no specific weather alert had been issued for these areas at the time of writing this report.
