Tensions between India and Canada have escalated sharply following allegations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who accused India of its involvement in the killing of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In a press briefing, Trudeau claimed that Indian operatives carried out covert activities on Canadian soil, which included issuing threats, orchestrating violent actions and targeting Canadian nationals.

India has firmly denied the accusations, describing them as baseless and responded by ordering the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats. Simultaneously, several Indian diplomats stationed in Canada have also been recalled.
