Amid deteriorating relations with Canada, India strongly dismissed a report in Canadian media that claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was aware of the plot to kill Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

According to a report from The Canada's Globe and Mail, unnamed Canadian officials suggested that PM Modi was aware of a plot to kill a Khalistani activist. The report further claimed that India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister  S Jaishankar were also informed about the plan.

Reacting to the allegations, Jaiswal said, "Such ludicrous statements made to a newspaper purportedly by a Canadian government source should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve. Smear campaigns like this only further damage our already strained ties."

This comes after Canadian news outlet The Globe and Mail, in a report released on Wednesday, cited a senior Canadian security official who claimed that Canadian security agencies believe PM Modi was aware of the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia, along with other violent plots.

“Canadian and American intelligence tied the assassination operations to Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah. Also in the loop, the official said, was Modi’s trusted national-security adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar,” the official was quoted as saying by the Canadian news outlet.

“While Canada does not have direct evidence that Modi knew, the official said the assessment is that it would be unthinkable that three senior political figures in India would not have discussed the targeted killings with Modi before proceeding,” The Globe and Mail reported.

The diplomatic relations between India and Canada reached an all-time low after Ottawa labelled the Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and five other Indian diplomats as "persons of interest" in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, designated as a terrorist by the NIA. In response, New Delhi strongly condemned the action and recalled six diplomats, including Verma.

Hardeep Nijjar Killing

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot and killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey on June 18, 2023, in British Columbia. Canadian authorities have since arrested and charged four Indian nationals in connection with his murder.

Last year, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, without providing any evidence, publicly accused India of being allegedly involved in Nijjar’s killing. However, India rejected the claims as ‘absurd’ and ‘politically motivated’.
