- India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train began regular service on the Jind-Sonipat route.

Jagran Correspondent, Jind: Two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train on July 17, marking a significant step in Indian Railways’ shift towards cleaner transportation, the country’s first hydrogen train began regular passenger services on the Jind–Sonipat route on Sunday. On its first day of operation, 20 passengers boarded the train from Jind Junction.
After leaving the yard, the train arrived at platform number one, where passengers gathered to catch a glimpse of the historic service. Many expressed excitement over the launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered train for regular passenger operations.
The train is expected to benefit commuters significantly. Despite being equipped with modern amenities, it will offer an affordable travel option for passengers. As the train stood at the platform, several passengers clicked selfies with it. The train remained at the platform for 25 minutes before departing for Sonipat at 7:40 am.
Rajpal, one of the passengers on the inaugural service, shared his experience of travelling on the hydrogen train. He said he was travelling to Sonipat with his grandchildren and had missed the opportunity to ride the train when it was inaugurated on July 17. He decided to travel on Sunday so that his grandchildren could experience the country’s first hydrogen-powered train journey.
Vishal, a resident of Batta village in Kaithal district, said he was travelling to Panipat for personal work. During his journey from Kaithal to Jind, he saw the hydrogen train and described it as a matter of pride that Haryana had become the starting point for India’s first hydrogen train service.
Passengers Kashi Prasad, Sonu, and Vipin praised the facilities available on the train. They said digital display screens installed inside the coaches provide information about upcoming stations and expected arrival times.
The train is also equipped with an announcement system that provides details about upcoming stations and onboard features. Charging points near the seats allow passengers to charge mobile phones and laptops. With facilities similar to metro services, the train also features windows designed to operate like those in metro coaches.

India’s First Hydrogen Local Train: Schedule and Timings
According to the schedule released by Northern Railway, Train No. 74010 will depart from Jind Junction at 7:40 am and reach Sonipat at 9:40 am. After a one-hour halt, the return service, Train No. 74009, will leave Sonipat at 10:40 am and arrive at Jind Junction at 1:00 pm.
Operated and maintained by the Delhi Division of Northern Railway, the train will run six days a week, except Fridays.
Route and Travel Time
The hydrogen train will cover the 89.1-kilometre distance between Jind and Sonipat in two hours, maintaining an average speed of 44.55 km/h. The return journey from Sonipat to Jind will take approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes due to scheduled operational adjustments along the route.
