India is all set to move closer to acquiring 114 Rafale fighter jets from France, with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) likely to clear the proposal ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit later this month.

DAC Clearance Expected Soon

According to a Times of India report, the DAC, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is expected to meet shortly to consider granting Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the high-value programme. The proposal had already received clearance from the Defence Procurement Board, led by the Defence Secretary, last month, paving the way for the next stage.

One of India’s Biggest Fighter Deals

If approved, the Rafale acquisition would rank among India’s largest fighter aircraft purchases, with an estimated cost of around Rs 3.25 lakh crore. The urgency stems from the Indian Air Force’s shrinking strength, which currently stands at about 29 squadrons against an authorised strength of 42, amid rising threats on both western and northern borders.

Manufacturing Plan Under Make in India

The proposal envisages the induction of 114 Rafale jets, with 18 aircraft to be procured in fly-away condition. The remaining jets are expected to be manufactured in India, with nearly 80 per cent of the fleet produced domestically. Indigenous content could reach up to 60 per cent under the Make in India initiative.

Variants and Industry Partnerships

Under the plan, the IAF would induct 88 single-seat and 26 twin-seat Rafale variants. French aerospace major Dassault Aviation is expected to partner with Indian private sector firms for local production and assembly.

Operational Edge for the IAF

Defence planners view the Rafale as a key force multiplier. Already operational with the IAF, the aircraft has proven its capabilities through advanced sensors and long-range strike potential. Armed with weapons such as the Meteor beyond-visual-range missile and the SCALP cruise missile, the Rafale significantly boosts India’s offensive reach.

Officials have highlighted growing coordination between Pakistan and China, along with evolving regional security dynamics, as major factors accelerating the acquisition process.

Once the DAC grants approval, the programme will move into detailed technical and commercial negotiations. Officials cited in the TOI report said the final shape of the deal is expected to emerge over the coming months.
