Epstein Files Row: Amid a row over the alleged mention of spiritual leader the Dalai Lama's name in Epstein files, his office clarified that Lama had never met sexual offender and trafficker Jeffrey Epstein in his entire life. In a press statement, the Dalai Lama's office asserted that no individual interacted with the convicted trafficker on his behalf. The clarification came after several Chinese outlets reported that Lama's name was mentioned 169 times in Epstein files.

In its statement, Lama's office asserted that the Tibetan leader had not authorised any meeting with Jeffrey Epstein on his behalf. “We can unequivocally confirm that His Holiness has never met Jeffrey Epstein or authorised any meeting or interaction with him by anyone on His Holiness’s behalf,” Lama's office in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, clarified.

“Some recent media reports and social media posts concerning the ‘Epstein files’ are attempting to link His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama with Jeffrey Epstein,” the statement added. Several media outlets, including those controlled by the Chinese government, in the past few days have reported that the Dalai Lama's name has been mentioned “169 times” in the files.

However, mentions in the files related to Epstein do not constitute any wrongdoing on their own. The Tibetan activists have asserted that mentions are not evidence of crime, adding that the vast majority of those mentioned in such files have not been accused of any crime.

“In the case of the Dalai Lama, none of the released materials indicate illegal behavior, financial exchange, or personal misconduct. The references primarily relate to public events, academic initiatives, or third-party discussions, often written by Epstein himself or intermediaries seeking prestige or access,” the Tibet Rights Collective stated on its website.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 due to a conflict with the Chinese armed forces after the Chinese government claimed the region. He was welcomed by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and has been residing in Himachal Pradesh since then.
