India and Qatar signed a significant agreement on Tuesday to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership. Both nations also exchanged several MOUs focusing on a range of areas including trade, energy, investments, innovation, technology, food security and cultural exchanges. The agreement was exchanged at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India and Qatar are also working towards strengthening their energy partnership and considering the possibility of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), during the visit of Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The potential FTA is expected to further enhance trade and investment between the two countries, solidifying their economic ties.

Additionally, a Revised Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion was signed to address issues related to income taxes, further facilitating smoother bilateral transactions.

"PM @narendramodi & HH Sheikh @TamimbinHamad Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar held wide-ranging talks at Hyderabad House today. Both leaders decided to elevate India-Qatar relations to a Strategic Partnership with a focus on trade, energy, investments, innovation, technology, food security, culture & people-to-people ties. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest," Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal said.
Earlier in the day, Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he was received by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Modi and other senior government officials.

The Qatar Amir is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers, senior officials and a business delegation. He had earlier come to India on a State Visit in March 2015.
The visit of Amir of Qatar will provide further momentum to the growing multifaceted partnership between the two countries.
India-Qatar cooperation in diverse sectors has been steadily growing in a framework provided by historically close ties and regular and substantive engagement, including at the highest levels of the two Governments.
