Taking a strong stance soon after assuming office for a third consecutive term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a comprehensive plan to school China over the issue of territorial integrity. As per a report in the Diplomat, India is mulling renaming of over two dozen places in Tibet, in a tit-for-tat move. The list of the places has been prepared by the Army's Information Warfare Division and is expected to be released soon.

The new names of the places are based on historical research and the opinions of the local residents. Notably, China recently renamed some areas of Arunachal Pradesh unilaterally, claiming that the territory belongs to them. India’s move is seen as a retaliation to this move by the dragon. China refers to Arunachal Pradesh as ‘Zangnan’. However, India has consistently rejected all of China's claims.

Recently, top officials of the Indian Army visited the disputed border areas.

In March, China renamed 30 places along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal, including 11 residential areas, 12 mountains, four rivers, one lake, one mountain pass, and a piece of land. It was the fourth instance when China renamed places which belonged to India. The first list of six such places was released by them in 2017, the second of 15 places in 2021, and a third list with names for 11 places in 2023.

China and India have been at loggerheads over a plethora of issues, including territorial claims, for the last few decades. The most aggressive face-off between the Indian Army and the PLA was witnessed in Ladakh in 2020.
