Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Tarique Rahman on a decisive victory in the 13th parliamentary elections of the neighbouring country.
Talking to X, PM Modi said, "I convey my warm congratulations to Mr Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh."
"This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership," he added.
Extending India's support, he added, "India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals."
Tariq Rahman's party has won 212 seats out of a total of 299, where polling took place. BNP completely overpowered Jamaat-e-Islami in the elections. Jamaat managed to win only 70 seats.
Tariq Rahman is now set to become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Rahman contested from two seats and won both.
Rahman returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile, following the death of his mother and the country's first woman PM, Khaleda Zia.
He quickly emerged as the leading contender for the post of Prime Minister as the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League was banned by the interim government after the 2024 uprising.
While BNP led a 10-party alliance in the polls, Jamaat contested in an 11-party alliance. For many years, Jamaat was an ally of the BNP.
Among other key parties was the National Citizens Party, a student and youth organisation that emerged from the anti-Hasina protests. It fought under the Jamaat-led coalition banner.
The voters also took part in country's fourth-ever referendum on the July Charter, a 84-point reform document. The charter includes limiting the term of prime ministers to 10 years, establishing an upper house of parliament, and restoring the caretaker system.
