In the ongoing vote count for Bangladesh's 13th national parliamentary elections, the alliance led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is heading towards a thumping majority as its tally has reached 212 constituencies, leaving behind the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance, which is leading on 70 constituencies, according to unofficial results.
As trends suggest, BNP's end of exile after 17 years, with a thumping majority, BNP chairman Tarique Rahman has claimed victory, saying, it has won a majority in the landmark election and will form the next government.
Mahdi Amin, BNP election committee spokesman, said the party was on track to win at least two-thirds of seats. He added that Rahman had won "both seats" he contested.
Jamaat concedes defeat
Meanwhile, Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman has conceded defeat as he said his party would not engage in obstructive “politics of opposition." Rehman added, “We will do positive politics."
According to The Daily Star portal, the counting has been completed in a total of 177 seats, while it is underway on the remaining 122 seats.
Of the completed 177 seats, the BNP and its allies have won 137. The BJI has secured 35 seats, while others secured 6 seats.

Meanwhile, in the national referendum, 65.3 per cent of people have voted 'Yes' to bring the reforms as counting continues.
The official data on the results is yet to be declared by the Bangladesh Election Commission.

47.91 per cent voter turnout had been recorded by 2 pm at 36,031 of 42,651 polling centres, according to the official Bangladesh Election Commission data. News agency Reuters cited local media estimates suggesting that it could cross 60 per cent mark.
