The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been implemented nationwide, yet questions remain on the number of individuals who have received citizenship under the law. Reports from West Bengal’s Siliguri reveal a disturbing trend that Indian citizenship documents are allegedly being sold for Rs 10,000 each. Fake Aadhaar, PAN and voter ID cards are reportedly created and provided to Nepalese and Bangladeshi nationals, enabling them to claim Indian citizenship fraudulently.
Acting on intelligence provided by the military, local police arrested an individual named Sanjay Sarkar for creating counterfeit Aadhaar cards. Sarkar was presented in the Siliguri Court on Saturday, facing charges of forgery and fraud. His bail plea was denied and he has been placed in police custody for five days.
Authorities are now questioning Sarkar to identify other members of the gang involved in this fraudulent activity. Initial investigations indicate that Sarkar has issued Aadhaar cards to Nepalese citizens, charging Rs 10,000 each.
Several individuals in the Phansidewa area, near the India-Bangladesh border, possess dual citizenship, exploiting both Indian and foreign credentials, Dainik Jagran reported citing sources. Police have also apprehended a Bangladeshi national in possession of an Indian Aadhaar card.
SDPO Neha Jain said that a raid on Sarkar's shop led to the seizure of computers, mobile phones, four fake Aadhaar cards and other documentation. While the investigation expands to examine the potential creation of fake passports, no evidence has yet surfaced regarding passport fraud, the official said.
