An Indian national, working as a farm labourer in Italy’s Latina, died on Wednesday after being left on the side of the road following an accident that severed his arm. The man identified as Satnam Singh sustained injuries while working on a farm in Latina, as reported by the news agency AFP.

Labour Minister Marina Calderone told Parliament that the Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions has lost his life. The minister also called the incident a ‘true act of barbarity’, adding that the authorities were investigating the matter and asserted that those behind the incident would be punished.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Italy took to X, formerly Twitter, to condole the demise of Satnam Singh. The embassy said it was working with local authorities and trying to reach the family to offer consular help.

"The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance," the post read.

Satnam Singh, aged 30 to 31, sustained injuries on Monday while working at a farm in Latina, a rural town south of Rome and home to thousands of Indian migrant workers. According to Flai CGIL trade union (an Italian organisation for workers in the agriculture and food industry), Singh was cutting hay when his arm was chopped off by a machine.

Satnam Singh’s employers ‘dumped’ him like a ‘bag of rubbish near his home’, news agency AFP reported citing a statement by Flai CGIL that related the incident to a ‘horror film’.

Police said Singh's wife and friends called them, and an air ambulance was dispatched. "He was flown to a Rome hospital, but he died (today) around midday," a Latina police official told AFP.
