In a bid to make travel smoother for passengers, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has implemented a new system to curb overcharging of amenities by vendors while travelling. Under the new initiative, vendors deployed on premium trains like Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, and Rajdhani will be given new uniforms with helpline numbers printed on them. Passengers will be able to lodge complaints directly.

According to Jagran.com, citing a senior executive of IRCTC, the move was prompted by a growing number of passenger complaints over overcharging of various items, including food items by the vendors from the passengers. The new system also includes a special card for vendors, which will have two QR codes.

A senior IRCTC executive stated that numerous complaints regarding catering and overcharging are received daily. He added that the number of complaints is expected to decrease after the new system is implemented. Passengers are urged to consult the fare list before making payments and to immediately report any irregularities.

How Will These Two QR Codes Assist Passengers?

The first QR code will give the passengers a list of authorised rates for all food and beverages. It will also provide accurate pricing to every passenger, significantly reducing the problem of overcharging.

On the other hand, the second QR code will be used for digital payments, thereby eliminating the problem of loose change and errors in cash transactions.

Where Are These Changes Currently Implemented?

The new system of IRCTC has been implemented so far on Rajdhani and Vande Bharat high-speed trains. Later, it will be implemented on other trains as well.
