Indian student, who was missing for nearly three weeks in the United States, has been found dead in Ohio’s Cleveland, the Indian embassy in New York said. 25-year-old Mohammed Abdul Arfath was a resident of Hyderabad. The embassy earlier said they were in touch with Abdul's family and working closely to ascertain his whereabouts with the help of the law enforcement agencies in the US. Today morning, the embassy conveyed that Abdul was dead.

The consulate expressed anguish over Abdul’s death, adding that they in contact with local agencies to ensure thorough probe into the incident. Besides, it said requisite arrangements were being made to send Abdul’s mortal remains to India.

“Anguished to learn that Mr. Mohammed Abdul Arfath, for whom search operation was underway, was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio. Our deepest condolences to Mr Mohammed Arfath’s family. @IndiainNewYorkis in touch with local agencies to ensure thorough investigation into Mr Mohammed Abdul Arfath’s death. We are extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family to transport his mortal remains to India,” the Indian embassy in New York posted on X.  

Abdul’s father told his son went to USA on May 23 to pursue a his master's degree. He said they used to talk to him daily but could not contact him on March 7. After his location wasn’t ascertained, they got a missing complaint registered. He said they got a WhatsApp call after 10 days stating that his son was kidnapped. He urged the State and Centre to find his son.

Abdul is the eleventh Indian to die in the US this year, most of them students. Indian parents, whose children are either working or studying in the US, are tensed over these incidents.

As per the data, over 2.6 lakh Indian students migrated to the US for studies in 2022-2023 session. This is a 35 per cent jump if compared with last year.
