Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Indian Railways is set to transform long-distance travel with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set, a state-of-the-art addition to its rapidly expanding fleet. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Railways, this innovative train is designed to offer a comfortable, high-speed travel experience, redefining overnight journeys in India.
Successful Trial Run of Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
The first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has successfully completed rigorous trial runs conducted by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) on 15th January 2025. The train covered 540 km in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad section, proving its capability in long-haul travel.
Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, this modern sleeper train was completed on 17th December 2024. Shortly after, it was transported to Kota Division, where it underwent further short-distance trials covering 30 to 40 km daily over three consecutive days. During testing, the train achieved speeds of 180 km/h, ensuring a smooth and stable journey for passengers.
A Comfortable Overnight Travel Experience
With its modern design, cutting-edge technology, and premium comfort, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to enhance passenger experience on long-distance routes. It is equipped with automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-inspired design.
At present, 136 Vande Bharat trains operate across India, primarily on short- and medium-distance routes, offering passengers a world-class travel experience. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will take this a step further by providing a quieter, smoother, and more luxurious journey, making overnight travel more comfortable and efficient.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Rollout Soon
Following the successful trial of the prototype, Indian Railways has scheduled the production of nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets between April and December 2025. These trains will set new benchmarks in efficiency, speed, and passenger convenience.
To support this expansion, Indian Railways has placed a major order for propulsion electrics for 50 rakes of 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets on 17th December 2024. This contract has been awarded to two leading Indian manufacturers, with the first batch expected to be ready within two years.
Looking ahead, full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains will begin in 2026-27, further strengthening India’s self-reliance in railway technology.
