Ranveer Allahbadia Controversy: Ranveer Allahbadia, a YouTuber, comedian Samay Raina, and the producers of the stand-up comedy show "India's Got Latent" were summoned by the National Commission for Women on February 17 for allegedly making disparaging remarks. According to the NCW, the remarks are offensive and go against the dignity and respect that each and every person deserves, especially in a culture that professes to value equality and respect for one another.
The hearing has been set at the request of NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar to discuss the controversial remarks made by the show's content developers.
The show's producers, Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra, as well as social media personality Apoorva Makhija, have also been called upon, in addition to Allahbadia and Raina.
Previously, the NCW wrote to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting regulatory steps to control obscene content available on various Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms and social media streaming websites.
The NCW Chairperson's letter to Vaishnaw was almost in the similar lines to the National Human Rights Commission's directive for YouTube to remove 'obscene and vulgar' content based on Allahbadia's comments.
NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo sent a letter to YouTube's Head of Public Policy, Mira Chatt, requesting an Action Taken Report within three days. The letter stated that the content in question initially seems to violate several legal provisions under the Information Technology (IT) Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), and other relevant laws.
Allahbadia, also known as "BeerBiceps Guy," made a question in a recent episode of the show that led to a heated argument and inquiries about the standards of comic material.
After receiving a notice from the government, YouTube has now taken down the video containing that question.
Police complaints have been made against Allahbadia, Raina, social media influencer Makhija, and other people connected to that incident in Guwahati and Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Allahbadia may be summoned by a parliamentary body to clarify his crude remarks; this came to light after Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who serves on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's Standing Committee, stated that she will raise the subject in the House. "Any abusive language in the name of comedy content crosses limits is not acceptable... You get a platform, that doesn't mean that you will utter anything..." she said in an X post.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also promised action.
