IndiGo Crisis: Amid an ongoing IndiGo crisis, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has responded to the allegations of a "monopoly model" from the opposition leaders, especially Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi. Naidu stated that the matter should not be politicised, adding that the government has tried to increase the competition in the aviation sector. He further stated that the necessary steps are being taken to resolve the issue and confirmed that accountability will be set for the situation. Earlier on Friday, Rahul Gandhi accused the centre of setting a "monopoly model" in the aviation sector, leading to the chaos.
However, the aviation minister, in his response, stated that the government has taken multiple steps to increase the competition. He further stated that more firms are likely to join the sector as the demand for aviation has significantly increased in the recent months. "The government has always tried to bring in more competition. We also introduced legislation to reduce leasing costs, allowing more aircraft to join fleets," Naidu told the reporters.
"I have always said competition should increase. The demand for aviation in the country is rising. So, this is an opportunity for people to enter this sector, and the government wants this too. It would be better if he (Gandhi) spoke with complete information," he added.
Earlier in a post on X, Rahul Gandhi stated the chaos erupted due to the poor strategies of the centre, adding that every sector deserved a competition to ensure transparency and accountability. "IndiGo fiasco is the cost of this Govt's monopoly model. Once again, it's ordinary Indians who pay the price - in delays, cancellations and helplessness. India deserves fair competition in every sector, not match-fixing monopolies," the Congress leader stated in his post.
Hundreds of IndiGo flights have been cancelled in the past seven days at several key airports, leading to a massive outrage from the passengers.
