A 24-year-old man from Indore allegedly staged his own kidnapping with the help of two friends to extort Rs 1 lakh from his father, police said on Wednesday. The accused, Satish Gupta, had reportedly fallen into a cycle of debt due to his expensive hobbies and betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. However, swift police action exposed the conspiracy, leading to the arrest of Satish and his accomplices, Aarush Arora and Tejveer Singh Sandhu.
The incident came to light when Satish’s father, Shreeram Gupta, received a call on Tuesday demanding Rs 1 lakh for his son's release. Alarmed, he contacted the police, who launched an investigation.
"Based on clues and technical analysis, we detained Arora and Sandhu, whose interrogation revealed the truth behind the kidnapping claim," Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Devendra Singh Dhurve said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

According to ACP Dhurve, Satish planned the fake abduction to secure money to pay off his debts. "His costly hobbies and betting on IPL matches had put him in a financial crisis. Out of desperation, he roped in his friends to call his father and demand ransom," the officer added. Further investigations into his betting activities are ongoing.

Notably, a similar case was reported earlier this month in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi, where a man, Pradeep Chauhan, faked his own kidnapping to escape repaying a Rs 5 lakh loan. Chauhan, a banking agent, sent a WhatsApp message to his family claiming he had been abducted after leaving for Varanasi on March 7.
However, CCTV footage exposed his movements, revealing that he had purchased a new SIM card and fled to Pune. Police tracked his phone and arrested him with the help of local authorities.
