Indore Water Contamination: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has confirmed that at least four people have died, and more than 149 have been hospitalised in Indore after consuming contaminated water in Bhagirathpura, prompting the state administration to step up emergency measures. As per officials, a leak in the main water line beneath a toilet is suspected to have contaminated the water. The incident triggered a public health scare in Indore, often ranked among India’s cleanest. In this regard, in charge deputy engineer Shubham Srivastava was sacked, while Zonal officer Shaligram Shitole and in charge assistant engineer Yogesh Joshi were suspended in connection with the contamination on Wedmesday.
District Administration Says Death Toll Has Crossed 10
According to a report by The Hindu, a senior officer in the district administration said that death toll has crossed 10. Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to submit a report in the matter.
“Till today, 7,992 houses were surveyed in which about 39,854 people were examined, out of which about 2,456 suspected patients were found, who were given first aid on the spot. Till today, 212 patients were admitted in hospitals, out of which 50 patients have been discharged. Currently, the number of patients admitted in hospitals is 162, and the number of patients admitted in ICU is 26,” a statement from the office of Chief Medical and Health Officer said, reported The Hindu.
While locals and Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava have claimed up to seven deaths, MP Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya refused to speak on the deaths but assured free treatment to all affected by the crisis in Bhagirathpura while speaking to news agency ANI.
Kailash Vijayvargiya said, "I cannot comment on the number of deaths at this time... However, we will provide Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those who have died. We are providing treatment to all the patients. We have deployed five ambulances... The number of patients arriving has decreased since yesterday.”

“The source of the contaminated water has been identified and is being repaired... The situation will be back to normal within a day or two. People should boil water before drinking it. We have deployed 50 tankers and are providing Narmada water to the people, and we have also distributed chlorine to every household,” he added.
The deceased have been identified as Nandlal (70), Urmila Yadav (60), Tara Kori (65) and Manjula (74). Investigation is underway to find causes of deaths of five others - Gomti Rawat (50), Uma Kori (31), Santosh Bigolia (53), Seema Prajapat (50) and five-month-old Avyan.
