A major public health failure has gripped Indore’s Bhagirathpura locality after a major rupture in a decades-old Narmada water pipeline allowed contaminated sewage water to seep into the municipal supply on December 26. The contamination has led to 15 deaths so far and left several others with severe gastroenteritis. To understand the full extent of the contamination, samples of the contaminated water were collected from the area over three days, from December 29 to December 31, and sent for testing by MGM Medical College.

The report, released on Thursday, revealed that lethal bacteria, such as E coli and Shigella, commonly found in human fecal waste, were detected in the water supply of Bhagirathpura. Collector Shivam Verma himself confirmed the horrific negligence, according to a report by Jagran.com.

Indore Water Contamination: Updates

- According to Dr. Madhav Prasad Hasani, the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), the contamination occurred after a leakage was found in the main drinking water supply line of Bhagirathpura at a spot where a toilet was constructed. 

- Officials suspect that this leakage led to the mixing of contaminated water with clean drinking water.

- Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Dubey said, quoted by PTI, “We are closely examining the entire drinking water supply pipeline in Bhagirathpura to find out if there is any leakage elsewhere.”

- Dubey further said that the supply of clean drinking water was restored on Thursday in the area; though, as a precaution, people have been advised to boil the water before drinking.

- In the aftermath of such a major water epidemic, the senior bureaucrat informed that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be issued to prevent such a crisis from occurring in the future. 

- Meanwhile, around 1,714 households in Bhagirathpura were examined during a health inspection, where around 8,571 people were screened, according to a health official quoted by PTI.

- Out of them, around 388 people showed mild symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea and were given primary treatment in their homes. 

- The official further said that since the outbreak of the water crisis in Bhagirathpura, 272 patients have been admitted to local hospitals, 71 of whom have been discharged so far.

- Currently, 201 patients are admitted, which includes 32 people in intensive care units (ICU).

- The government had announced an ex gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.

- Additionally, Union Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya handed over cheques of two lakh rupees each to the families of four deceased on Thursday.
