In a bid to curb fraudulent activities, Indian Railways has closed approximately 2.4 crore IRCTC accounts in the last six months due to irregularities detected using AI technology. The move targets users exploiting automated tools for booking Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets.
The Reason Behind Account Closures
With the rise of online tools facilitating automatic ticket bookings, the Railways tracked thousands of users misusing these bots. This resulted in genuine passengers facing difficulties in securing tickets. To combat this, an AI-powered monitoring system was developed to identify suspicious accounts, focusing on those without Aadhaar verification.

What Should Users Do
Currently, out of 13 crore IRCTC users, only 1.2 crore accounts are Aadhaar-verified. To avoid account blockage, users are advised to verify their IRCTC accounts with Aadhaar promptly. Non-verified accounts are at risk of being blocked. If you want to protect your account from a potential block, you are advised to verify your account with Aadhaar.
Indian Railways has made Aadhaar verification mandatory for Tatkal ticket booking. Users with Aadhaar-linked accounts will now enjoy an exclusive 10-minute window for booking, shielding them from competition with automated bots and unauthorised agents.
