V. Narayanan has been appointed as the next chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday. He will take over from the current chief, S Somnath, on January 14. 

Currently, Narayanan serves as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) and has held several key, important roles within the ISRO. One of his significant accomplishments was as the project director for the C25 Cryogenic Project of the GSLV Mk Ill vehicle. His team successfully developed the C25 Stage, a vital component of GSLV Mk III.

Throughout the tenure of Narayanan, the LPSC delivered 183 Liquid Propulsion Systems and Control Power plants for various ISRO missions. He has been recognised with several awards and honours including the Silver Medal from IIT Kharagpur, a Gold Medal from the Astronautical Society of India (ASI), and the National Design Award from NDRF.

Narayanan led ISRO during one of the most important phases of ISRO, including the historic Chandrayaan-3 mission that made India the first country to soft-land on the Moon's south pole. Earlier, he had served as the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and was instrumental in the development of the GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle. 

Narayanan, one of India’s foremost experts in rocket and spacecraft propulsion, has nearly four decades of experience at ISRO and has been instrumental in the development of cutting-edge technologies that have propelled India to the forefront of space exploration.
