Flights from Dumna Airport in Jabalpur are witnessing a decline amid the forthcoming festival season. SpiceJet has recently suspended its services to Delhi and Mumbai, withdrawing all operations from the airport. Previously, the airline operated two flights weekly to Delhi and one to Mumbai.

This decision comes just before the festive seasons of Dussehra and Diwali, during which a significant number of passengers travel from Mumbai and Delhi. Now, flyers will have to rely solely on IndiGo for their travel plans. Currently, flights from Jabalpur connect to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Bilaspur, Indore, and Jagdalpur.

The situation for Jabalpur is particularly concerning as it ranks the lowest among four major cities in Madhya Pradesh in terms of air connectivity. The lack of connections to major metropolitan areas has left travellers frustrated. In contrast, Indore Airport boasts approximately 95 domestic flights. Gwalior Airport also sees more than 33 flights daily, but Jabalpur has been reduced to just five flights per day.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dumna Airport enjoyed more than 12 flights daily. The issue appears to stem from a lack of political will, as representatives from Indore, Bhopal, and Gwalior remain proactive in expanding air services.

Once serviced by airlines such as SpiceJet, Deccan Airways, and Air Alliance, Jabalpur lost these connections as these companies withdrew their operations. Recently, several airlines have commenced flights from Gwalior, even with a reduced number of travellers. In contrast, despite good occupancy rates from Jabalpur, with 70 to 80 per cent of seats filled on flights, new routes have not been introduced.
