Jaisalmer Bus Fire Tragedy: PM Announces Rs 2 Lakh Ex-Gratia | Key Updates
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the Jaisalmer bus fire incident that claimed at least 20 lives and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.
- The bus, operated by KK Travels, had reportedly been running on the route for just five days. New revelations suggest the vehicle, originally an AC bus, was modified into a sleeper coach, which made evacuation difficult during the blaze.
- As per a News18 report, the bus's interiors were revamped with fibre body panels and curtains, both highly flammable materials. The windows were reinforced with strong glass, which, along with the combustible interiors, helped the fire spread rapidly.
- The bus was packed with passengers, some even sitting in the narrow aisle due to lack of space. When the fire erupted, the heat from burning wires reportedly jammed the only front exit, trapping many inside. While a few passengers managed to smash the windows and get out, many others couldn’t escape in time.
- An official PMO statement announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF). "An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," the post on X added.
