The tensions between India and Canada escalated in September 2023 after former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accused India of alleged role behind the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India reacted to the allegation calling it "absurd" and "politically motivated".

Ottawa claimed that it had credible evidence to prove its allegations, but as the External Affairs Ministry from time to time claimed, nothing concrete was handed over to New Delhi.

After Trudeau stepped down from office, it was expected that the relationship between Ottawa and New Delhi would see a reset. In the recently concluded elections, Mark Carney emerged as the successor of Trudeau. Carney, during his election campaign, had said that rebuilding ties with India would be a priority for his government and termed it an "incredibly important relationship."

After he assumed office of the Prime Minister of Canada, PM Modi congratulated him and stressed strong people-to-people ties between the two countries while saying he was looking forward to “unlocking greater opportunities".
