In a separate incident on Nov 15, an accidental blast at the Nowgam police station on the outskirts of Srinagar claimed nine lives and left 32 others injured, including 27 police personnel, two revenue officials and three civilians. The explosion occurred late Friday night while authorities were extracting samples from a large cache of explosives recently seized in the Faridabad “white-collar” terror module case, officials said on Saturday.
According to officials, the blast took place as police and forensic teams were handling the explosive material brought from Faridabad. The ammonium nitrate, part of the 360 kg of explosives recovered from the rented residence of arrested doctor Muzammil Ganaie, was being sampled when the explosion occurred. Six bodies have been recovered so far and taken to the Srinagar Police Control Room; identification is still underway.
At least 24 police personnel and three civilians are being treated at various hospitals in Srinagar. The powerful blast shattered the police station building and was followed by smaller successive explosions, delaying rescue operations by the bomb disposal squad. Early Saturday morning, J&K DGP and CRPF IG Pawan Kumar Sharma visited the site, and security in the area has been tightened.
