Jammu And Kashmir News: Jammu and Kashmir experienced severe rainfall on Sunday, resulting in flash floods and landslides, particularly in the Ramban district. The inclement weather has wreaked havoc, claiming at least three lives in the Bagna village area, where homes were swept away by landslides.

The impact of the torrential downpour has been significant, with around 30 houses destroyed and numerous vehicles damaged. The Jammu-Srinagar highway (NH44), a vital 250 km route, has been blocked at both ends due to the flooding.

Earlier in the week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued warnings about heavy rain across the Union territory. Reports from April 16 indicated that a western disturbance was approaching the Western Himalayan region, predicting challenging weather conditions from April 18 to 20.

Jammu And Kashmir Schools Closed

In response to the severe weather, the education minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Sakina Itoo, announced that all schools in the Kashmir valley would remain closed on April 21. She stated that this decision was made to protect the safety and well-being of students amid ongoing dangerous weather conditions.

Rescue operations are currently underway in Ramban, with teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil volunteers, the Army and local NGOs joining efforts to assist those affected. Areas such as Banihal, Khari, Batote, Dharamkund, Seri and Chamba have also faced severe weather impacts.

Five Dead In Two Days

The recent fatalities bring the total to five lives lost in rain-related incidents across the Jammu region in just two days. On Saturday, two people, including a woman, died and another woman was injured when lightning struck in the Arnas area of Reasi district.

M. Mohapatra, the director general of the IMD, stated that it remains unclear whether a cloudburst occurred in the affected regions. He noted that while heavy rainfall was recorded, the lack of observation networks in hilly areas makes it difficult to confirm such events.
