A Vande Bharat Express train, specifically engineered to function flawlessly in the harsh winter conditions in Jammu & Kashmir, was unveiled by the Railway Board on Tuesday, January 8, 2025, for the planned Katra-Srinagar rail route.

According to officials, the Railway Safety Commissioner is presently inspecting the route.

Railways assert that the train, which is stationed at the Shakurbasti coaching depot in New Delhi, has unique climate-related characteristics.

To meet the operational challenges and passenger amenities in the severe weather conditions of J-K, the train has several extra features compared to the 136 Vande Bharat Express trains that are currently operating throughout the nation, railway officials told reporters.

Vande Bharat Train Winter-Specific Features

"It has advance heating systems which prevent freezing of water tank and bio-toilet tanks, provide warm air for vacuum system as well as laboratories and ensures air-brake system functions optimally for smooth operations even in sub-zero temperatures," said Dileep Kumar, Executive Director (Information & Publicity) Railway Board.

He added, "It has embedded heating elements in the windshield so that the driver's front lookout glass gets automatically defrosted ensuring clear visibility in hard winter conditions."

According to board authorities, it contains all the amenities of the current Vande Bharat trains, including fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic plug doors, mobile charging stations, and more, aside from climate-related characteristics.

The train is a representation of India's commitment to overcoming economic and geographical divides by better linking the Kashmir Valley with the national railway network, the Railways said in a press release.
