Jammu-Kashmir Weather: Avalanche Warning Issued For Doda, Kishtwar, Other Districts After Snowfall In Higher Reaches

Jammu And Kashmir Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an avalanche warning for five districts of Jammu and Kashmir following a recent spell of heavy snowfall across the higher reaches. The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) warned that recent snow accumulations in the higher reaches have increased the risk of slides, posing significant threats to residents and tourists in the mountainous belts.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas and follow official weather updates to avoid inconvenience.

Jammu And Kashmir Weather: Avalanche Warning For THESE Districts

The weather department has issued a low-danger avalanche warning for five districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Ramban, over the next 24 hours, news agency PTI reported. This comes after a week of moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.

The avalanche is likely to occur 2,800 metres above these districts during the next 24 hours, the PTI report added.

What Is An Avalanche?

Avalanches occur when excessive snow accumulation creates immense pressure on high peaks, causing unstable layers to shift and collapse. This high-speed flow of snow rapidly slides downhill, sweeping away anything in its path, Jagran.com reported. Due to these volatile conditions, authorities have warned that mountaineering can pose an extreme risk to life.

Jammu And Kashmir Weather Forecast

The Regional Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast partly to generally cloudy conditions across Jammu and Kashmir till December 29. During this period, intermittent light rain is likely in the plains, while higher reaches may receive light snowfall at isolated places.

A fresh western disturbance is expected to impact the region between December 30 and January 1, possibly bringing another round of light rain and snow to the upper reaches, followed by mostly cloudy weather between January 2 and 3.
