A 65-year-old woman was allegedly locked inside her home in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh by her son before he left for the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj with his wife and children, police said on Thursday. The incident took place in a Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) quarter in Subhash Nagar colony under the Ramgarh police station limits.
According to the police, the woman, identified as Sanju Devi, was left alone in the locked house since Monday and survived only on flattened rice (chura), police said. The woman was rescued by the police after her daughter was informed by neighbours.
Hearing her cries of hunger, neighbours alerted her daughter, Chandni Devi, who lives about five kilometres away in Kahubera. She then informed the police, who broke open the lock and rescued the woman on Wednesday. She was immediately provided food and medicine before being admitted to the CCL hospital.
Ramgarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Parmeshwar Prasad stated that the woman's son, Akhilesh Kumar, a CCL employee, locked her in the house before leaving for Prayagraj along with his wife, children and in-laws. Kumar later told the police that he had arranged food and water for his mother before departing.
Meanwhile, the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, recognised as the world’s largest religious gathering, continues to attract millions of pilgrims. On Wednesday alone, over 1.19 crore devotees participated in the holy dip at Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna and deified mythological Saraswati rivers converge.
So far, the event has drawn over 56 crore devotees, with crowds increasing as the festival nears its grand conclusion. Despite logistical challenges, devotees continue arriving in large numbers by road and rail to partake in the sacred rituals.
