Jharkhand News: A Class 12 student from Jharkhand’s Garhwa district died on Tuesday, a month after she was allegedly slapped by her school’s principal in charge for violating the dress code by wearing slippers instead of shoes, police said.
The student, identified as Divya Kumari, had attended the morning assembly at her school on September 15 when Principal (in-charge) Droupadi Minz reportedly reprimanded and slapped her for not following the uniform policy. Initially, Divya appeared fine but later developed severe health issues and depression, according to police officials.

She was first treated at a hospital in Daltonganj and later referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi. Despite days of treatment, she succumbed to her condition on Tuesday.
Following her death, Divya’s family filed a complaint at the Bargarh police station, alleging that mental stress and humiliation caused by the incident led to her death.
Tension gripped the area after angry relatives and villagers blocked the main road at Tehri Bhandaria Chowk with her body, demanding the arrest of the principal and action against the school authorities. The blockade continued for over three hours, disrupting traffic.
Police and district officials reached the spot and assured protesters of a fair investigation. The principal, Droupadi Minz, has so far declined to comment on the incident.
