Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, witnessed protests on Monday evening as Left-wing student groups raised slogans against PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah inside the campus following the Supreme Court’s decision to deny bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 riots conspiracy case. The slogans were raised during a gathering at the “Guerilla Dhaba” on the university premises.

Nearly 30 to 40 students linked to organisations such as the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) and the All India Students’ Association (AISA) participated in the protest, during which the slogans were raised. The demonstration took place a day after the Supreme Court refused bail to former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case.

Aditi Mishra, president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union, said that every year students hold a protest to condemn the violence that occurred on the campus on January 5, 2020.

"All the slogans raised during the protest were ideological and did not target anyone personally. They were not directed at anyone," Mishra told PTI.

BJP Reacts JNU Protest Video

On the reported sloganeering against PM Modi and Union HM Amit Shah in JNU campus yesterday, Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra said, "Some people raise slogans against the nation, religion, verdict of Supreme Court, in support of Afzal Guru, terrorists, Naxals. The Naxals, terrorists are being eliminated and those who conspired against Delhi, the Supreme Court has announced its verdict on it, so this is just their frustration."

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that slogans including “Modi Shah ki kabr khudegi” were raised following the denial of bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. He claimed the protest reflected what he described as the “tukde ecosystem” and termed the participants “urban Naxals” and “anti-India.”

BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari supported the allegation, stating that the late-night gathering outside Sabarmati Hostel was not a legitimate protest but an attempt to promote what he called “anti-India thought.” He further alleged that academic spaces were being misused to legitimise extremist narratives.

The protest brought together several ongoing issues at JNU. January 5 marked six years since the 2020 campus attack, which the teachers’ union described as unresolved, while the students’ union held a symbolic “Guerilla Dhaba” against the violence. Students also opposed the Supreme Court’s denial of bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam and raised concerns over new security measures, including facial recognition systems, magnetic gates in the library, and police notices served to JNUSU office-bearers.
