BJP national president JP Nadda on Monday launched a strong attack on the Congress, alleging that people within the party had shared information with Maoists during the 2013 Jhiram Ghati attack that killed several senior state leaders. He made the remarks while addressing a public programme in Janjgir-Champa.
The event, titled Janadesh Parab, was organised at the Khokhra Police Ground to mark two years of the BJP government led by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
Claim Of ‘Betrayal From Within’
Recalling the Maoist attack in Bastar’s Jhiram valley, Nadda said he was directly associated with organisational responsibilities in Chhattisgarh at the time. He alleged that sensitive information related to the movement of Congress leaders was passed on by people from within their own party.
He said such actions amounted to a betrayal of the public and questioned how citizens could remain safe if those meant to protect them were working against them.
Reference To 2013 Maoist Attack
On May 25, 2013, Maoists ambushed a convoy of Congress leaders during the party’s Parivartan Rally in Bastar district, killing 32 people. Those killed included then state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel, former leader of opposition Mahendra Karma and former Union minister Vidyacharan Shukla.
BJP Claims Progress Against Maoism
Nadda said decisive action against Maoism began under the “double-engine” BJP government at the Centre and state, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He claimed Maoist influence has now been restricted to limited pockets of the state.
According to him, around 2,500 Maoists have surrendered in the last two years, while over 1,800 have been arrested. He also said several top Maoist leaders have been neutralised.
Targeting the former Bhupesh Baghel-led government, Nadda accused it of corruption, weak governance and maintaining an understanding with Maoist groups. He said voters rejected such policies in the 2023 Assembly elections.
Government’s Welfare Claims
Highlighting the BJP government’s performance, Nadda said farmers received over Rs 3,700 crore within the first month of the new government, with large-scale direct benefit transfers over two years. He also cited schemes for women, youth, tribals and landless labourers.
Chief Minister Sai said a combined approach of security, rehabilitation and development is helping move Chhattisgarh towards the goal of becoming Maoist-free.
